Somehow I had never done this before. I don't know if it's because it's not done much in Ireland, or if it was just that my Mum never thought to get a pumpkin. But the combination of having an actual house with a front door (rather than an apartment in Dublin or Paris, or a house on a derb in Marrakech where the whole pumpkin thing might have been a bit mystifying to our neighbours) and an American husband meant that if we couldn't go to an actual pumpkin patch (I'm not sure what these actually are, but I understand that Americans are very into them) then we could at least carve a pumpkin and put it outside our house to alert the neighbourhood children to our willingness to distribute chocolate.

You're off to a good start! Great job with the Jack O'Lantern.

Sara, you're too cute. If I need a dose of happy couple with cute baby, I'm stopping by here :)

Very cute! I actually did one yesterday too, and got trick or treaters! (And that's that lovely anthropologie ruffly skirt of yours, isn't it? I'm still jealous of that.)

Fun isn't it. I was on a wild goose chase all last week trying to find a pumpkin in Paris, finally a friend who had gone to some sort of pumpkin farm gave me one. I always insist on carving a pumpkin every year even though we are the only household for miles who has one. I hope you saved the seeds and roasted them afterwards, that's one of the best parts!
Very nice job on your pumpkin!

Pumpkin carving at its best.
Yours was/is wonderful.
When we lived on LI and had a porch and the children were small, we made lots and put them all round.
Ah the lost days of domestic godessdom.....

I love this post, glad I discovered you! As an American, it's funny to hear you've never carved a pumpkin before.
